This week's pick is Thornburg Mortgage Inc. (TMA). It is going ex-dividend on May 2nd, so you want to buy it by this Friday, April 29th. It pays an annual dividend of 9.1% with a great payment history. TMA primarily provides jumbo mortgages.
REITs aren't favored by Wall Street just now after five years of gains. The concern is the rising fed interest rate which can adversely affect financial and other interest-sensitive stocks. So, you might see some short-term capital gain weakness on paper, but the dividend is real money.
There are over 13 broad categories of REITs so it is easy to diversify your portfolio without giving up high dividends. If you are a long term investor, not a short term trader, you will be rewarded.
